Buddy's Art

Buddy Ebsen's talents were much more than just acting.  Oil painting was one of his favorite things to do and he became an accomplished artist painting beautiful scenes and landscapes.  During his later years, with the encouragement of his wife Dorothy, he started and completed 9 paintings before his passing known as The Uncle Jed Country Folk Art collection.  The collection was inspired by the hit TV series "The Beverly Hillbillies" where he characterized Jed Clampett, the patriarch of that celebrated piece of Americana.  The collection focuses on the easy-going life of Uncle Jed and his two friends, Red and Duke and reflects on a time gone by.  These unique paintings will bring back memories of that era and will surely put a smile on your face.

"WELLL DOGGIES"

Welll Doggies is Uncle Jed's unique expression of pleasant surprise, known worldwide as a friendly hello.  In this painting the pleasant surprise is flavored with ambivalent concern at the size of Duke's burgeoning family.  Duke's soul mate Dixie and her puppies are learning about sharing their food and water with uninvited guests.  Mother goose is a concerned lifeguard.

Feeling spring in the air Uncle Jed, ol' Duke and even Red are splashing.  But not Miss Kitty, she escaped up the clothespole, as Uncle Jed relax's in the tub waiting for his clothes to dry while reading about Davy Crockett.

"CHRISTMAS CHEER"
Limited Edition Lithograph - 18 x 24 - Unframed Signed & Numbered

Jed and Duke have been up to the timber line to fetch a Christmas tree.  Happily headed home they had forgotten about the deer crossing until they see Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer fixing them with an indignant glare.  Jed brings the truck to a sliding stop, to give Rudolph the right of way and incidentally avoids a tangle with a family of skunks whose opportunist mama can apparently read signs.

"BAYOU MENU"
Limited Edition Lithograph - 18 x 24 - Unframed Signed & Numbered

The second of the Uncle Jed Country series depicts Jed and Duke fishing for their dinner.  The viewer has to wonder who will be eating whom, perhaps this is Jed's friendly alligator, and the 'gator knows Jed will share his catch.  Duke is casting a wary eye on the intruder.  Even the egret in the tree is waiting for a handout.  It is early morning and the sun hasn't come out full force, so there is an eerie light over the Bayou, a mystical place with birds calling out over the water.

"WELLL KITTIES"

18 x 24 Serigraph

The 3 paintings here, "Hong Kong", "Sea Power" and "Sedona", are all serigraphs.  A serigraph is an artist's color print made by the silk screen process.  Dedicated to producing the finest serigraphs available in 1989, Vision Fine Art Press released Buddy Ebsen's limited edition serigraphs based on original oil paintings.  Each and every color is hand mixed by "feel" perceived and achieved through skill and mastery for that particular piece.  Every plate, and there could be as many as 50 layers, is painstakingly reconstructed, brush stroke for brush stroke, after the original painting.    Based upon an original painting the serigraph is not intended to be an exact copy but rather an interpretation of the original, retaining the essence of the piece while enhancings it with the distinct qualities of the silk-screen process.  To insure the integrity of the edition, all plates are destroyed upon completion of the edition.  This is why a serigraph is far superior in quality than a simple print.  The painstaking attention to detail and the artists' personal involvement insure that every Buddy Ebsen serigraph is a quality work of art that will be cherished for years to come.
